What Does “In-Cell Display” Mean?

An On-Cell display integrates the touch sensor onto the display panel, instead of using a completely separate external touch panel above the screen. This structure helps create a thinner and cleaner touch display module while keeping responsive PCAP touch performance for everyday interaction.

On-Cell technology is commonly used in OLED and AMOLED modules for smartwatches, handheld devices, mobile terminals, industrial control panels, smart home products, and flexible display applications.

On-cell technology is much less difficult than the In cell Touch.When Samsung launched the super AMOLED in 2010, it used on-cell technology.

On-Cell Touch vs In-Cell Touch

In fact, both On-cell technology and In-cell technology are embedded touch panels. The two technologies have slightly different name, but the principle is similar, both are with the touch screen embedded in the display module.
Because the On-cell technology only needs to form a simple transparent electrode pattern between the color filter substrate and the polarizing board, it is easier to produce compared to In-cell.
In addition, the area of the effective display pixels will not decrease, and almost no deterioration of the image quality.
Compared with in-cell, On-cell has a more touch layer, the thickness will increase a little. In-cell embedded touch sensor in the pixel,  display area of pixels will reduce, which will lead to picture quality deterioration a little.

 

Why On-Cell Touch Matters for OLED and AMOLED Products

For compact electronic devices, the display needs to be thin, bright, responsive, and easy to integrate into the final housing. On-Cell touch helps reduce extra front-stack layers, making it suitable for products where space, weight, and visual design are important.

This is especially useful for wearable OLED displays, mobile-size AMOLED screens, flexible OLED panels, and products that need a smooth front surface with customized cover glass.
 

Common Applications for On-Cell Displays

On-Cell displays are widely used in products that need both high-quality image display and direct touch interaction. Typical applications include smartwatches, fitness bracelets, medical wearables, handheld terminals, portable GPS devices, smart home controllers, vehicle displays, industrial interfaces, and compact consumer electronics.

For smaller devices, On-Cell AMOLED modules help support vivid UI design in limited space. For medium-size products, On-Cell OLED screens can provide a cleaner touch solution for navigation, control, monitoring, and interactive display interfaces.
 

On-Cell vs In-Cell vs External Touch Panel

On-Cell, In-Cell, and external touch panel solutions all support touch input, but their structures are different.

On-Cell places the touch sensor on the display cell, offering a practical balance between slim design, touch performance, and production feasibility. In-Cell integrates the touch function deeper inside the display structure and is often used in highly integrated mobile devices. External touch panels use a separate touch layer above the display, which can be flexible for customization but usually adds more thickness.

For many OLED and AMOLED projects, On-Cell is a strong choice when the product needs integrated touch without making the module structure overly complex.
