What is XR?
XR means Extended Reality, which contains VR, AR, and MR.
The Mobile World Congress (MWC2022) was held in Barcelona, Spain, which was when ByteDance(the holding company of Tiktok)and Qualcomm announced that they will work together to develop XR devices and software to build a global XR ecosystem.
CEO of ByteDance, Liang Rubo said that ByteDance is committed to building solutions that empower developers and creators and will join Qualcomm in hardware, software, and technology routes to launch the XR ecosystem. Its Pico devices will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon Spaces XR developer platform.
ByteDance officials said in an interview that the latest data shows that ByteDance's Pico company has risen from the world's third-largest VR hardware supplier to second place, after Meta Quest (formerly OculusQuest), but the gap is large. Meta Quest has a global market share of over 70%, whereas Pico’s is about 6%.
With the strong support of ByteDance, Pico terminal shipments are expected to increase significantly in 2022, the official said. In the next step, Pico will increase investment in chips, optical devices, sensors, and other hardware, strengthen software research and development in the fields of perception and interaction, and make efforts for ultra-HD VR content production.
It is worth mentioning that during the Beijing Winter Olympics, Pico cooperated with CCTV Media Group to launch the central video VR App, supporting Pico Neo 3 devices to watch the VR live broadcast and video of the Winter Olympics, which has been widely praised by users.
As augmented reality glasses become an extension of smartphones, the smartphone market says XR will be bigger. It is reported that Qualcomm has reached cooperation with a number of XR software and hardware manufacturers, with MetaQuest2 and other VR headsets using Qualcomm XR dedicated chips.
